Text and Phone Call Fraud: 4 Tips to Identify the Bad Guys

By: Milestone / 09 Feb 2023
Scam Alert
There has been an increase in fraudulent texts and calls to our members that appear to be coming from Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union. These "bad guys" utilize technology to change their caller id to appear as though they are coming from us. Many times, they will tell you they are investigating potential fraud on one of your accounts. This is called spoofing. If you receive a text or a call and it is not what you are expecting, hang up. The scammers are trying to steal your money or valuable personal information. To verify if Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union is contacting you call your local office or the number found on the back of your debit or credit card. To protect yourself when you receive unsolicited calls from the credit union or any organization:
  • Never assume an unexpected call is legitimate. Hang up and call back using a number you can verify on a bill, a statement, the back of your debit or credit card, or an official website.
  • Don't give out personal information unless you've initiated the call – account numbers, any part of your debit or credit card numbers, CVV code, expiration date, Social Security number or any part of that number, username or passwords – or answer security questions. MMFCU will never ask for your account number if we call you. We will not ask for any personal information via telephone or email that you, the member, has not initiated.
  • Be suspicious. Con artists can be very convincing: They may ask questions, or sound threatening, or sometimes seem too good to be true.
  • Use extreme caution if you are being pressured for immediate payment or action.
Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union takes your personal financial security very seriously. Please remember, do not provide account information over the phone or click on links included in emails or texts you were not expecting. If you are unsure if a phone call, email or text is legitimate, call us we are here to help protect your financial wellbeing.
