Financial Wellness Minute: Honesty

I'm Jackie Formo, from Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union's Fergus Falls Office. You may have heard the phrase, "there is no modesty in the doctor's office". To protect your health, you need to be transparent with your doctor. To protect your wealth, you need to be honest with your credit union staff as they are trained to improve your financial well-being. When your teller asks you questions that may be uncomfortable, they listen for clues to save you from a loss due to fraud. They don't ask these questions to be invasive, but to get a clear picture of the situation. Examples would be:
  • The origins of a check or the destination of your large cash withdrawal.
  • Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace transactions can be subject to more questions.
In some cases, the fraudster coaches their victims to answer in a certain way – this is always a scam. If you are honest with your teller or financial services expert, they can help identify fraud and stop the scam before you lose money. Unfortunately, in many cases of fraud, once your hard-earned money is gone, it is gone. It could also leave you owing money to pay for the loss. Want more information on protecting yourself and what to do should you be a victim of fraud? Go to usa.gov/identity-theft.
