October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Here are some tips to protect you online all year long with simple actions.
Use Strong Passwords Strong passwords are long, random, and unique and include all four character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols). Do not use personal information within your password or the same password for multiple accounts. Password managers are a powerful tool to help you create and store strong passwords for each of your accounts.
Turn On Multi Factor Authentication or MFA Enabling MFA makes you significantly less likely to get hacked. Use MFA for your online accounts that offer it, especially email, social media, and financial accounts. It is an added layer of protection.
Recognize & Report Phishing? Be cautious of unsolicited messages asking for personal information. Avoid sharing sensitive information or credentials with unknown sources. Your bank or credit union will never ask for personal information not initiated by you. If something feels off or suspicious, hang up and report it.
Keep Software Updated Ensuring your software is up to date is the best way to make sure you have the latest security patches and updates on your devices. Regularly check for updates if automatic updates are unavailable. Make sure family and friends are aware of these safety tips, so we can all become safer online!
