Common Scams that Occur During the Holidays

The holidays are a perfect time for scams. We have distractions with work, home, shopping and getting ready for the new year.

Scams to watch out for:
  1. Fake product sales- Be suspicious of emails, texts or social media posts that offer "DEEP" discounts compared to reputable retailers. Do not click on suspicious links. Go directly to the retailors website to review offers and determine if you want to make a purchase before entering your card information.
  2. Shipping scams- be very careful of emails and text about tracking packages. It is better to go directly to the carrier's website and track from there.
To protect yourself from scams, here are some good tips:
  1. Be suspicious of high-pressure, threatening or time sensitive phone calls, emails or text.
  2. Be hesitant if you receive notifications about "problems" with your accounts, purchases, credit cards, or package deliveries.
  3. Never give out personal information to companies or agencies that you did not first call.
  4. Monitor accounts and credit cards carefully. Set up account and card alerts. Go online and check your transactions for accuracy of charges throughout the holidays, not only at month end. If you find suspicious transactions, contact your financial institution or credit card company immediately.
