The More You Know The More You Grow
Financial Education
The financial world can feel intimidating. There’s a lot to learn and frequent changes, and decisions that feel like high stakes. This is why we’re passionate about helping our members and community build financial literacy. Part of Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union’s mission is to provide resources to help improve the financial well-being of our members and communities at large. Mid Minnesota offers information, seminars, and other educational opportunities by partnering with our local communities, employers and schools to promote financial literacy for a better future.
Teaching Your Students & Employees
Most of MMFCU’s work is in the classroom and with existing organizations already serving those needing additional financial education. We have partnered with more than 20 different school districts, businesses and organizations (county social workers, group homes, and Lutheran Social Services).
Below are a few of the educational topics we can offer free of charge with NO promotional materials in settings such as schools or businesses.
Money Management
Budgeting Basics! You will learn how to create a budget and follow it. Also, in this workshop we will discuss needs versus wants, and how your values play a role in your own personal budget.
Identity Theft
MMFCU staff will educate on the various types of identity theft and how to avoid being a victim. Effective password development and presenting yourself safely online are also discussed.
Networking
You may have heard the saying, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. . . in our personal and professional life that often holds true. Gain additional networking confidence.
Credit Reports
There are often many questions involving credit reports. In this workshop, you will get answers to the following questions: What is a credit report? How is a credit score determined? What is a credit report used for, and how do you keep it in good condition?
Poverty Simulation
Facing – and the Faces of – Poverty
We all know poverty exists. But do we really understand what it is like to live in poverty? The Poverty Simulation program is designed to help individuals better understand poverty by stepping into the real-life situations of others struggling with, and living in, poverty. Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union facilitates the Poverty Simulations to help raise awareness and increase our understanding of the challenges individuals and families living in poverty face each day. This first hand exercise results in greater empathy and may inspire local change.
A simulation that gives youth a taste of the real world and dealing with finances.
During the simulation they are assigned a job, salary, and family. They then must select housing, transportation, food, clothing, childcare – all while building their budget. Students experience unexpected windfalls and unplanned expenses, just like real life. They write checks and use debit cards for their purchases and must balance both their checkbooks and their budgets. Participants learn how basic personal finance skills can help them avoid financial problems in the future and gain a valuable new perspective on their choices with money.
Our partner, Lutheran Social Services can help you take charge of your finances for good.
Experts from Lutheran Social Services (LSS), a partner of Mid Minnesota’s in providing financial education is there to help our members with their financial journey. MMFCU members have access to up to six sessions of free and confidential financial counseling per year. MMFCU also partners with LSS to provide free webinars throughout the year.
