9 Ways to Protect Your Information & Money

Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union takes your personal financial security very seriously.

Each year we come to your community and host a shred day to safely dispose of documents that contain your personal information, see this year's dates here. We also provide education and alerts on current scams so you can better protect yourself. And we maintain and reinforce barriers to your information and money on a constant basis. There are things you can do too, because the "bad guys" often target people directly to steal your money or valuable personal information:
  • Shred all financial information such as: statements, credit card receipts, pre-approved credit applications, etc.
  • Do not respond or click links if you receive a text or email you are not expecting. Never assume it is legitimate even if it looks like it is coming from a business or government agency you would normally trust. Instead contact the organization using a phone number or email address you can verify on a bill, a statement, the back of your debit or credit card, or an official website.
  • Don't give out personal information unless you've contacted the business or government agency. Be suspicious. Con artists can be very convincing: They may ask account related questions, or sound threatening, or sometimes seem too good to be true.
  • Monitor your accounts regularly. Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union's online banking and mobile app allows you to do this anytime from anywhere and set-up alerts.
  • Review your credit report at least once a year at: www.annualcreditreport.com or better yet use Savvy Money in online banking and mobile app to provide monthly updates on your credit report.
  • Empty your wallet of extras. Remove your social security card and credit cards you do not use often. Carry your birth certificate and passport only when necessary.
  • Keep an emergency list of all your financial account numbers and credit card accounts in a safe location, such as a safe deposit box at MMFCU.
  • Strengthen your passwords: it is a proven fact that password length is the best way to ensure it is not compromised. Use a phrase or sentence that uses numbers, lowercase letters, uppercase letters and special characters. Don't use names or phrases about yourself; and use different passwords for everything.
If you suspect that you are victim of identity theft or any type of fraud contact MMFCU and the local authorities right away. We are here to help protect your financial well-being.
